CCEPH Flu Team Prepares for the 2018-19 Season (December 2018)
Center for Clinical Epidemiology and Population Health (CCEPH) scientists and staff will be conducting four studies at sites across the Marshfield Clinic Health System this winter to better understand influenza immunology, vaccine protection and transmission of influenza infection. The performance of vaccines made without using eggs will be the focus in two of the studies.
CCEPH Scientist Leading Study Aimed to Increase Rural Adolescent Vaccination Rates (November 2018)
Center for Clinical Epidemiology and Population Health (CCEPH) scientist Huong McLean, PhD, MPH, is leading a study to understand why adolescents living in rural areas are less likely to receive the HPV vaccine. The study team will survey parents and physicians in rural and urban areas of Wisconsin and Minnesota, followed by an intervention to improve vaccine uptake.

CCEPH Epidemiologist Receives Sebold Fellowship (October 2018)
The 2018 Gwen D. Sebold award is being presented to James Donahue, DVM, PhD, MPH, on October 10, 2018. Dr. Donahue's research is focused on vaccine safety and he has contributed to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) - funded Vaccine Safety Datalink (VSD) project for the past 15 years. The 2018 Sebold Fellowship recognizes his leadership in vaccine research and his service to Marshfield Clinic Research Institute (MCRI). The receipt of this award was also acknowledged in the local Hub City Times.
CCEPH Welcomes Pediatric Infectious Disease Physician and Researcher (June 2018)
Scott Olson, MD, is a welcomed addition to the Center for Clinical Epidemiology and Population Health (CCEPH). As the only Pediatric Infection Disease Specialist at Marshfield Clinic Health System (MCHS), Dr. Olson will be splitting his time between research, outpatient visits and inpatient consultations. In CCEPH, he will be a member of its vaccine research team leading an upcoming Vaccine Safety Datalink (VSD) study of a new hepatitis vaccine and will be a co-investigator on other studies.

MCRI has a history of both industry-sponsored and investigator initiated clinical trials for more effective disease treatment and prevention. Since Hurricane Maria, Center for Clinical Epidemiology and Population Health (CCEPH) Scientist Jeremy Pomeroy, PhD, MS, discussed the setbacks and hurdles he and the team had and their progress in the childhood obesity study. The team also implemented helpful techniques from their previous studies to improve recruitment in a study testing an approach to combat the island's high rate of obesity.

MCRI Helps FDA with Drug Safety Monitoring (April 2018)
Center for Clinical Epidemiology and Population Health (CCEPH) Epidemiologist Robert Greenlee, PhD, MPH, was recently quoted in an AMA Wire article about the FDA Sentinel System to monitor drug safety. Marshfield Clinic Research Institute (MCRI) is one of the 17 participating organizations and Dr. Greenlee noted that each site keeps their own data behind a local firewall to protect patient privacy.
CCEPH Epidemiologists Contribute to Youth STEM Education in Wisconsin (April 2018)
Huong McLean, PhD, MPH, Jennifer King, MPH and Kayla Hanson, MPH volunteered their time to design and supervise the Disease Detectives exam at the 2018 Wisconsin Science Olympiad (WSO) state tournament. The exam tested middle and high school students' ability to interpret and analyze data from outbreaks of foodborne illness.

Marshfield Clinic Contributes to National Mid-Season Flu Vaccine Effectiveness Estimates (February 2018)
On February 15, 2018, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) published the 2017-18 interim, or mid-season, estimate of influenza vaccine effectiveness (VE) based on enrollments at Marshfield Clinic and 4 other U.S. sites. These estimates are used to guide next season vaccine strain selection, additional flu vaccine research and policy recommendations.
