CCEPH Scientist Interviewed on Preventing Falls from Tree Stands During Hunting Season (November 2017)
Jeffrey VanWormer, PhD spoke with RFD Radio in November to warn hunters about the risk of falls from tree stands. RFD is a Farm Bureau Network with more than 80 stations in Illinois. Dr. VanWormer previously published a study on tree stand falls in central Wisconsin. During the radio interview, he noted that hunting injuries tend to be serious and a cell phone is often the only way to get out of the woods.
CCEPH Researcher Interviewed by Minneapolis Star Tribune on Hazards of Deer Stands (November 2017)
Jeffrey VanWormer, PhD published a study last year describing five years of tree stand fall injuries in central Wisconsin. This caught the attention of a Minneapolis Star Tribune reporter writing about a Minnesota hunter who slipped from a deer stand and fractured his spine. In the article, Dr. VanWormer discussed the long-term risk of fall-related injuries in hunters, the contribution of alcohol, and the more frequent occurrence of fall-related injuries in bow hunters.
What You Need to Know About the New Shingles Vaccine (October 2017)
Edward Belongia, MD, recently spoke with the Washington Post regarding a new vaccine to prevent shingles that was recently licensed by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and recommended by the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP). He serves as Chair of the ACIP Herpes Zoster Work Group which has been evaluating the new vaccine (Shingrix) and the previously licensed vaccine (Zostavax) over the past two years.

Ed Belongia, MD discussed MCRI's participation in the U.S. Flu VE Network with Channel 7 News (WSAW). In the interview, Dr. Belongia informed viewers that by being one of five sites in the U.S. funded to conduct vaccine effectiveness each year, Marshfield Clinic contributes research results which assist the World Health Organization (WHO) in selecting flu strains for the following year's vaccine.
