Marshfield Clinic Research Institute is accepting applications from undergraduate, graduate, dental and medical students considering a career in research for the Summer Research Internship Program, which is a mentor-led virtual internship program that will run May-August 2022. Individuals can apply at marshfieldresearch.org/srip.
“At its core, research is a quest to create new knowledge. People who choose a research career enjoy the process of discovery," said Jeffery VanWormer, Ph.D., research scientist and Summer Research Internship Program director. “The Research Institute highly values education and our scientists and staff are eager to pass along their enthusiasm to the next generation of knowledge seekers."
Interns will work with a research scientist on an independent project and contribute to all aspects of the research process through a virtual platform. The summer will culminate with an oral presentation about the project results at the annual Research Symposium. This year's symposium will be held virtually in early August.
Interns are also required to attend an Institutional Review Board meeting, lead a journal club session and prepare an abstract describing their research. In some cases, the summer research project can serve as the capstone project or thesis if required for the student's degree program.
In addition to their independent projects, the interns are given access to and encouraged to attend scientific seminars and journal clubs as well as additional opportunities through Institute for Clinical and Translational Research (ICTR), ethics or scientific review.
Interns for the Summer Research Internship Program are provided an hourly wage made possible through donations made to the Marshfield Clinic Health System Foundation. The Research Institute has offered summer research internship opportunities to qualified students since 1974. The primary goal of the program is to provide a mentored, hands-on research experience for students considering a career in research.
