Marshfield Clinic Research Institute is seeking applicants for its Summer Research Internship Program (SRIP).

SRIP is open to full- or part-time continuing college or university junior or graduate students, including graduating seniors who have applied to graduate/medical/dental school in Fall 2023. The primary goal of the program is to provide a mentored, hands-on research experience for college undergraduate, graduate, dental, and medical students considering a career in research. Through the three-month full-time working program (typically from May through August), students work with a research scientist on an independent project and contribute to all aspects of the research process.

“Interns gain valuable experience at MCRI by being immersed in research activities,” said Seth Langreck, SRIP Program Administrator. “This opportunity can serve as a catalyst to a career in scientific research exploring oncology, precision medicine, agriculture, epidemiology and many more fields.”

SRIP students are required to attend an Institutional Review Board meeting, lead a journal club session, prepare an abstract describing their research, as well as prepare and deliver an oral presentation of their research at the annual Research Symposium in early August. In addition to the independent projects, SRIP program students are given access to and encouraged to attend scientific seminars and journal clubs as well as additional opportunities through Institute for Clinical and Translational Research (ICTR), ethics, or scientific review.

Through funding provided primarily through philanthropy, the program provides interns with an hourly wage. In some cases, the summer research project can serve as the capstone project or thesis if required for the student’s degree program.

Research areas, potential mentors, and projects for SRIP students are listed on the Summer Research Internship Program Research Areas Page. Visit the SRIP website for full details on eligibility and applying. Online applications are due Wednesday, February 15 at midnight CST. Visit the 2022 SRIP Research Symposium to see interns' final projects.

MCRI has offered summer research internship opportunities to qualified students since 1974.
