Dr. Lum was responsible for NIOSH initiatives in health communications and media relations, and served as team leader for the international program portfolio for over 12 years until his retirement on Jan. 1, 2011. He now serves as a senior advisor to the NIOSH director on e-communication and research translation issues. Before moving to Washington, D.C., Dr. Lum served as director of the Division of Health Education and Promotion, Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in Atlanta. Dr. Lum was responsible for the Agency’s activities in environmental, community and health professions education.

Dr. Lum completed master’s and doctoral work in public management and communication at the University of Southern California. He lectures extensively on new media with a focus on hazard communication. Dr. Lum’s background includes public health service in Micronesia and West Africa. He currently serves as the founding chair of the Communications Network of the International Congress on Occupational Health (ICOH), Rome, Italy. He holds an adjunct lecturer appointment at the George Washington University School of Public Health and Health Services.
