Marshfield Clinic Research Institute joined TriNetX, a global health research network, in January 2021, to increase clinical trial opportunities for individuals in central Wisconsin.

Since implementation in January, 57 trials have been presented to the Research Institute. So far, 23 trials in the areas of dermatology, oncology, neurology, rheumatology, cardiology, pulmonology, nephrology, psychiatry, gastroenterology and pediatrics have been identified as viable, with several undergoing budget and contract negotiations.

TriNetX combines real time access to a vast store of clinical data with state-of-the-art analytics.  Researchers, health care organizations, pharmaceutical companies and contract research organizations throughout the world use TriNetX to identify patient cohorts, participate in sponsored trials and analyze real patient data.

“Marshfield Clinic Research Institute is a leader in clinical trials and research," said Dr. Steven Jacobsen, interim executive director for the Research Institute. “Being part of the TriNetX network increases our opportunities to participate in high-impact studies and bring the best care to our patients. We anticipate increased opportunities for our geographically dispersed patient population to participate in clinical trials that may make a difference in their health."

Research Institute investigators may now use the TriNetX web portal to query both Marshfield Clinic Health System network of about 1.8 million patients and the broader TriNetX network of about 70 million patients for de-identified aggregate clinical data, assisting investigators with study design/feasibility and patient recruitment.

The Research Institute supports and oversees clinical trials of drugs, devices and biotechnology conducted throughout the Health System. The Research Institute is staffed with research nurses, study coordinators and technical support staff that are organized into a multispecialty and oncology program. The teams at the Research Institute are nationally certified by the Association of Clinical Research Professionals (ACRP), by the Society of Clinical Research Associates (SoCRA) and/or as an Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN).

“Marshfield selected TriNetX as a platform to increase our collaboration with pharmaceutical companies," said Dr. Robert Haws, Director of the Clinical Research Center at the Research Institute. “In particular, we will leverage TriNetX's Trial Connect capabilities to more effectively engage with industry sponsors and ultimately bring new therapies to our patients through clinical trials."

TriNetX is the largest and fastest growing collaborative research network, representing health care organizations and health data partners across the world. TriNetX has presented thousands of clinical trial opportunities to the health care organizations on its network and has been cited in hundreds of scientific and peer-reviewed publications.
